The world of football moves at a rapid pace, and just a week after the defeat of Stade Rennais against Olympique Lyonnais, Bruno Genesio is set to be dismissed by the club’s management. They have already found his successor.
The certainty of a coach’s position can be fleeting, and as the storm caused by Lyon’s victory at the Roazhon Park seemed to have subsided, Bruno Genesio will ultimately be shown the door, paying the price for Stade Rennais’ poor performance in the league. According to reports from Ouest-France, the current coach of the Breton club will leave his position, apparently after negotiating his departure with François Pinault, although it is unclear whether it is a resignation or a dismissal. This upheaval is now a certainty and is expected to be officially announced soon, as the Rennes management has already found the replacement for the former Lyon coach in the form of Julien Stéphan.
Julien Stéphan returns to Rennes
Stéphan had previously been dismissed by Stade Rennais in March 2021 and had since joined Strasbourg, only to be let go in January 2023. Unsuccessful in his bid for the position of head coach of the French U21 national team, Julien Stéphan will initially have a six-month contract with Rennes, before the club’s management makes a decision for the next season. In the Ligue 1 standings, Stade Rennais is currently in 13th place, which is obviously not to the liking of the club’s management. Interestingly, in a survey conducted this week on the OF website, the supporters seemed to be in favor of keeping Bruno Genesio in his position. However, this option, which was being considered, is no longer on the table, and the official announcement of Genesio’s departure and Stéphan’s arrival is expected to take place on Monday.
