Union Berlin part ways with Urs Fischer

Urs Fischer has left his position as head coach of Union Berlin by mutual agreement, the club announced on Wednesday.

The German coach had been in charge of the club since 2018, leading them to promotion to the Bundesliga and qualification for the Champions League. However, Union have struggled this season and currently sit bottom of the Bundesliga table with just six points from 11 games.

“I have said recently that Urs Fischer is an excellent coach and I am absolutely convinced of that,” said Union president Dirk Zingler.

“His personality and his successful work have characterised our club in recent years. Together, we have come to the conclusion that the time has come to take a different path. It is a very sad moment, not only for me personally, but also for the whole Union family. Urs Fischer leaves us as a friend who we will always welcome with open arms.”

Fischer is the first Bundesliga coach to be sacked this season. He is expected to be replaced by former Borussia Dortmund assistant coach Edin Terzic.
